Soft, strong and extra lofty, our yarns bloom beautifully with their first wash.Â
We classify the weight of our yarns according to the Craft Yarn Council's Yarn Standards. You can find their simple guide to yarn weights here
All of our wool and wool blend yarns are spun from pure wool and exotic fibre sourced directly from farmers in Western Canada and through the Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers. Canadian wool is noticeably different than other wool, as our sheep must weather freezing temperatures. As a result, their coats are fluffier and bulkier, making higher quality wool for cold-weather garments.Â

To protect the quality of the wool and our environment, we practice minimal processing and refrain from using harsh chemicals. We do not superwash wool so that its best natural characteristics are preserved. As such, Custom Woolen Mills wool yarns can also be used for wool felt techniques.Â
In addition, we do all of our own dyeing here at the mill. For some yarns, we use standard and safe chemical textile dyes; however, for others, we offer naturally dyed options. Learn more about wool processing in our blog, Wool Textiles and the R’s of Sustainability Part 1: Rethink and Refuse.
