Preparing Your Wool

When you send wool for custom processing, you will be receiving your own fibre back. Therefore, careful preparation and animal husbandry will improve the quality of your finished product.

Additionally, there are many different breeds of sheep, and each one produces wool with different characteristics. For example, some wool types provide loft and resistance to felting, making superior bedding products, while others are exceptionally soft and are well-suited for next-to-skin knitwear. Choosing the appropriate product for your wool type or project aspirations is a must.

If this is your first time having wool processed, please feel free to contact us to discuss your processing options and ensure your finished product meets your needs.

Wool Reprocessing

We're happy to reprocess fibre from our wool-filled bedding products. Follow these simple instructions to prepare your old comforter for reprocessing, and contact us if you have further questions.

Custom Processing FAQs

Custom Woolen Mills 101
Will I get my own fibre back?

Yes, when you send fibre in for custom processing, it will be processed separately through each process in the mill and you will get your own fibre back.

How long does it take to get my fibre processed?

The turnaround time for custom processing varies based on the product being made and the time of year. Generally, turnaround time for processing in batting or roving is approximately 8 to 16 weeks from when we receive your fibre here at the mill. The turnaround time for bedding is also approximately 8 to 16 weeks. The turnaround time for processing into yarn is usually around 6 to 8 months from when we receive your fibre here at the mill. Finally, the turnaround time for socks is approximately 12 to 18 months from when we receive your fibre.

How should I package my fibre for shipping?

Make sure that your fibre is good and dry when you package it up, then package it as compactly as possible in whatever bags or boxes you have available to you. Some people use vacuum pack bags, while others use old (but clean) feed bags or cardboard boxes. Wool is very voluminous and the shipping tends to be charged on its volume - the more you pack it down, the more economical it will be to ship. Make sure you label each bag or box with your full contact information, including name and phone number, and include a copy of your processing instructions with each package.

When and how do I pay?

You pay on the finished weight of your processed fibre when it is all complete and ready to return to you. You can pay by Visa or MasterCard prior to having it shipped back to you, or by Cash, Debit, Visa, or MasterCard when you pick up your finished product at the mill.
