Since we are about an hour out of Calgary, sometimes it's nice to turn visiting the mill into a full-day getaway from the city. If thats what you're doing, then be sure to stop in at the Cafe Radio in the town of Carstairs for lunch, a coffee, or a glass of wine.
A favourite haunt of ours, the Cafe Radio offers everything from tea and cookies to top notch bistro/concert nights. The atmosphere is fun and funky, and the food is delicious. It's owned and operated by a local musical family, the Valleaus, and everything they serve up is home-made, locally sourced, and full of hearty rural character. But don't just take our word for it; check out their feature on the Foodnetwork's You Gotta Eat Here or this review by CBC's John Gilchrist.
While you are there, you can also check out the work of local artist, Elsie Archer, as part of the Wellspring Visual Artnetwork Artwalk.
To get to the mill from Cafe Radio all you need to do is head east out of Carstairs on Highway 581 for about 20km and follow our signs - easy peasy! (see our map if you want the specific details)
