It always surprises me that many people in the area have not heard about Olds College Fibre Week; a continuing education program that celebrates fibre, from raw fleece to the finest works of craftsmanship. As one of very few programs set up to provide high level spinning and weaving instruction (they have a multi-level graduation system for each craft), Olds College Fibre Week draws enthusiastic fibre students from across North America. They offer week-long courses with exceptionally talented Master Spinners and Master Weavers, as well as a wide assortment of smaller workshops on knitting techniques, dyeing, felting, crocheting, lace work, and the list goes on. With it in our own back yard, and with onsite accommodation in the college dorms, it is perhaps the easiest way for rural Albertans to get an introduction to fibre craft and to connect with other fibre folks.
The 2016 Olds College Fibre Week runs from June 17 to 23. They have just released this years workshop offerings and registration opens on March 8th. Custom Woolen Mills and a great assortment of other fibre vendors will be at the Merchant Mall (with all the fibre and supplies you could want), so even if you don't take workshops, it is a great place to enhance your fibre stash.
Spread the word and hope to see you there!
